How to Choose Curtains for Your Room

How to Choose Curtains for Your Room

Trying to pick out the perfect window curtains, it is definitely one of the most important factors to consider. Here we start with figuring out a room from scratch or trying to work your curtain color into your existing home decor. Nothing brings a room together like curtains can. Simple home decor things give you the opportunity to bring a refreshing new look to a room that’s already established.

Here are a couple ideas for using your home decor to select your curtains.

Here’s how to choose the perfect set of curtains size for your window

For the best fit of your track or pole it should be 15-20cm above your window, and should stretch 15-20cm wider than the window on each side.

The accurate sized curtains must have a natural gather even when fully closed. In order to get this gather right, you’ll need to double your track or pole measurement.

Use a metal tape measure for better precision. Measurement at multiple points is required because windowsills and floors are not always in level.

  1. Measure the rod/track

Start by measuring the width of your rod/track without the ends. If you are didn’t installed yet, measure the width of your window and add 12-16 inches (30-40 cm) to that number, rods/tracks are commonly installed 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) away from the window on either side.

  1. Calculating curtain width

If you are using rod/track measurements as they are, curtains will cover the width but the fabric will be flattened across the window. To make them overlap each other, add another inch (2.5 cm) to the width measurement.

To get the proper folds when the curtain is closed, multiply the rod/track width by two. For a more luxurious look or if the curtains are semi-sheer, multiply the rod/track width by three.

  1. Calculating the curtain length (drop)

Got width now, you need to decide on how long you want your curtains to be. There are three common curtain drops :full — ends at about 1 inch (2.5 cm) away from the floor, sill — ends at about 1 inch (2.5 cm) away from the windowsill, and puddle — extends for about 1-3 inches (2.5-8 cm) on the floor.

Once you are with the right drop, measure the distance from the rod/track top to where you want the curtains to end. If you don’t have a rod/track installed yet, so that they are typically installed 4 inches (10 cm) above the window frame.

Curtain color matching

Curtains will have a great impact on the look of your home. To select the right color, just ask for a swatch of the fabrics you’re considering. And hold them up against sofas, pillows, walls and make sure the pattern contains at least a bit of the wall color.

Example: If your walls are white or ivory, choose a pattern with a white or ivory background. And, if you’ve want more options for more colorful walls, you can repeat the color in the fabric pattern’s background or foreground design. Need not to hold out for an exact color match in either case.

If you would like to include a splash of color, that increase privacy, create darkness, and add a layer of insulation to the windows
